# Tim McGinley Diploma 01 # written on 19_01_05 # Statement of intent Selby fire station # TITLE [Design Philosophy] # SUBTITLE[0] “process and colour” Re use of the existing facilities to aid the phasing process, with primary construction work taking place on top of the existing fire truck bays, the project would develop a semi- permanent phased look. The project will reveal visually the process that spawned it as well as the fire safety measures it has employed. Like a giant cutaway axonometric drawing. The main difference between this proposed scheme and current thinking comes from considering the station as an emergency cooling machine, therefore much of the design will allude to water whereas some sections of the station (maybe the rest area) will have allusions to the bravery and heroic nature of the fire service members, maybe a pixel image painted on the slats of the practice tower. This will represent itself within the design in using a light blue colour for the structure as opposed to the norm of using red. The idea is that it might be possible to model the system with the idea of white blood cells, or glands. It is possible that in losing the colour red it and only adding it sparingly at the end it will be possible to explore the design more freely. # SUBTITLE[1] “structure” There is room for construction above the existing station as already discussed, one additional bay will be provided and the public reception retained however the northern part of the site will be replaced by a landscaped ramp up to the roof of the bays for quick access for the users. The structure of the new building will emerge from the earth ramp and be water filled to increase its fire resistance. The design of the structure will allude to pipes under pressure, the structure will be something like FOAs Yokohama Terminal after having some serious pulsating muscle Manga treatment. The steel structure will be triangulated and adaptive to the various phases of the proposal and also to the multiple states of the machine. A good point of this might be an open day as opposed to response to a major emergency. This situation could be colour coded changing from blue to red, perhaps lights projected onto the building. # SUBTITLE[2] “emergency response” The most important idea of this proposed scheme is what a fire station is, The fire service is there to put out fires but also as a preventative. It is an fire service is an information and regulatory body. On top of this it is proposed that the new station be capable of responding to large emergencies in the form of a central organisational body. To aid in this it is proposed that the new station has its own helicopter, dedicated to multi disciplinary organisational response. Using the light blue colour scheme, as the representative of this new amalgamated emergency response. # SUBTITLE[3] “information” The stations primary function is to prevent fires. It will perform these tasks by promoting fire safety tips through various media outlets around the site and daubed across its skin 'in the form' of information. In this respect it is in a very good location as it has an extensive audience from the roads on either sides. Another important aspect of the site's relationship to the primary function of the building is that the sites surroundings are all flat so any tall points in the building can be seen from far around.
